Elder Quentin L. Cook (Apr. '20): "The Blessing of Continuing Revelation to Prophets and Personal Revelation to Guide Our Lives"

Explanation:

The ideas in this blog are meant to be used in small, home-like environments (2-5 people), although any of them could be adapted for other contexts.  I am also envisioning these activities as guided by a parent(s), but again that need not be the case.  For teaching ideas to use in Relief Society and Elders Quorum classes see my other blog here.

For Adults:

  1. Discuss the idea that revelation to the Church through the prophet gives us a pattern for how revelation is to work in our own lives and families.
  2. Read par. 14-15 ("When important changes . . . of the Lord").
  3. Using that passage, identify processes of revelation to the Prophet and Apostles.
  4. Discuss how those processes are (or should be) represented in our families/personal lives.

For Teens/Tweens:

  1. Introduce the idea that personal revelation most often comes through the Holy Ghost but that we can take steps to be better able to receive and recognize revelation.
  2. On a sheet of paper, draw a vertical line down the middle dividing the paper in half.  Label one side "The Holy Ghost" and the other side "Preparing to Receive Revelation."
  3. Read par. 22-33 ("Personal Revelation is . . . to school us).  As you read identify lessons shared about the Holy Ghost and how we can prepare to receive revelation.  Record these lessons in the appropriate column.
  4. As you make the list, discuss the items that you notice.  Share experiences and/or related scriptures (scripture stories) as appropriate.

For Kids:

  1. Create a list of the 5 most important things in the Church (excluding the Savior).
  2. Talk about the list for a couple of minutes discussing how important each of those things is.
  3. Mention that Elder Cook tells us what the most important element in the Church is.
  4. Read par. 4-5 ("the Church of  . . . Savior Jesus Christ).  Depending on the understanding of the children, you may need to explain that the phrase "continuing revelation" is having a prophet.
  5. Discuss why having a prophet is number one on Elder Cook's list (for example, everything else in the Church could be restored, if lost, as long as we have a prophet).
  6.
