Explanation:
The ideas in this blog are meant to be used in small, home-like environments (2-5 people), although any of them could be adapted for other contexts. I am also envisioning these activities as guided by a parent(s), but again that need not be the case. For teaching ideas to use in Relief Society and Elders Quorum classes see my other blog here.
For Adults:
- Discuss why the Lord has an organized church on Earth.
- Read par. 4-10 ("However, being a . . . life to come").
- Focus on par. 9, change each sentence in this passage into a question that starts with something like "How does participating in the Church . . .?" For example, "How does participating in the Church help me learn to recognize the voice of the Holy Spirit?"
- Discuss each of these questions in turn and ponder any changes that you may feel inspired to make about how you approach church attendance/participation.
For Teens/Tweens:
- Cut some pictures of famous people (athletes, musicians, celebrities, etc.) out of magazines or print them off the computer.
- Show the pictures to the teens/tweens and talk about why many consider these people great. Make a list of the reasons they come up with.
- Talk about the list and how most (all?) of the items on this list can make us see ourselves as flawed or less than others.
- Now, contrast this with how God sees us.
- Read par. 19-31 ("You might be . . . to embrace you").
- Based on this passage, make a list of what God uses to determine our worth (we are His children).
- Discuss how this idea should impact how we see ourselves and others and our worth.
For Kids:
- Talk about how you could sum up all of the commandments in 15 words or less.
- Share some of their ideas.
- Explain that Elder Uchtdorf did this.
- Read par. 6 ("Our part is . . . serve God's children).
- If appropriate, you could read some scriptures related to this, e.g. Matt. 7:12 or 22:36-40.
- Talk about why loving God and others is so important.
- Ask the kids to share some ways they could show more love to those around them.
