Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf (Apr. '20): "Come and Belong"

Explanation:

The ideas in this blog are meant to be used in small, home-like environments (2-5 people), although any of them could be adapted for other contexts.  I am also envisioning these activities as guided by a parent(s), but again that need not be the case.  For teaching ideas to use in Relief Society and Elders Quorum classes see my other blog here.

For Adults:

  1. Discuss why the Lord has an organized church on Earth.
  2. Read par. 4-10 ("However, being a . . . life to come").
  3. Focus on par. 9, change each sentence in this passage into a question that starts with something like "How does participating in the Church . . .?"  For example, "How does participating in the Church help me learn to recognize the voice of the Holy Spirit?"
  4. Discuss each of these questions in turn and ponder any changes that you may feel inspired to make about how you approach church attendance/participation.

For Teens/Tweens:

  1. Cut some pictures of famous people (athletes, musicians, celebrities, etc.) out of magazines or print them off the computer.
  2. Show the pictures to the teens/tweens and talk about why many consider these people great.  Make a list of the reasons they come up with.
  3. Talk about the list and how most (all?) of the items on this list can make us see ourselves as flawed or less than others.
  4. Now, contrast this with how God sees us.
  5. Read par. 19-31 ("You might be . . . to embrace you").
  6. Based on this passage, make a list of what God uses to determine our worth (we are His children).
  7. Discuss how this idea should impact how we see ourselves and others and our worth.

For Kids:

  1. Talk about how you could sum up all of the commandments in 15 words or less.
  2. Share some of their ideas.
  3. Explain that Elder Uchtdorf did this.
  4. Read par. 6 ("Our part is . . . serve God's children).
  5. If appropriate, you could read some scriptures related to this, e.g. Matt. 7:12 or 22:36-40.
  6. Talk about why loving God and others is so important.
  7. Ask the kids to share some ways they could show more love to those around them.
