Pres. Dallin H. Oaks (Apr. 20): "The Melchizedek Priesthood and the Keys"

Explanation:

The ideas in this blog are meant to be used in small, home-like environments (2-5 people), although any of them could be adapted for other contexts.  I am also envisioning these activities as guided by a parent(s), but again that need not be the case.  For teaching ideas to use in Relief Society and Elders Quorum classes see my other blog here.

For Adults

  1. Make sure that everyone has access to a copy of the talk.
  2. Read the quote in para. 3 ("The power of . . . in the family").
  3. Make note that the priesthood power is the same in both the Church and the family, but it is used and governed slightly differently.  The purpose of this activity is to explore those similarities and differences so that we can more fully access the power of the priesthood in both settings.
  4. On a piece of paper draw to overlapping circles (a Venn diagram).  Label one "Priesthood in Church" and the other "Priesthood in the Home."
  5. Look through the talk and identify passages that explain the priesthood in the Church, in the home, or in both.  If it belongs uniquely to one or the other write it in the part of the circle that only applies to that setting. If it belongs to both contexts, write it in the parts of the circles that overlap.
  6. Discuss these passages and what they mean for you and your family as you go along.

For Teens/Tweens

  1. Read para. 5 ("To understand the . . . of priesthood keys."
  2. Search the talk for the answers to the following questions and discuss what you discover (not every question has a direct answer in the text of the talk but all can be inferred):
    1. What are priesthood keys?
    2. Who holds keys? (generally speaking)
    3. Where are priesthood keys (not) needed?
    4. When doing what activities are people acting directly under priesthood keys?
    5. How does a person exercise preisthood authority?
NOTE:  It is not vital that you have clear answers for each of these questions yourself.  There is great value in discussing these issues.  In fact, not having but seeking an answer is a powerful step in receiving personal revelation.

For Kids

  1. Read the definition of priesthood in para. 2 ("The priesthood is . . . of His children).
  2. Make a list of things at church that are done "for the benefit" of us.
  3. Now, make a list of things that are done at home that are "for the benefit" of us.
  4. Discuss how all of these things are done through priesthood power.
I hope that these ideas work for you-- even if they only serve as a catalyst for something else.  Please let me know how I can make this site more valuable for you (different format, etc.).  Thank you and stay safe.
